I will be completely honest with you, and I must admit that some of these things I personally have messed up. Over the last couple of years, I have made it a point to learn as much as possible on team building and duplication and honestly I make it an ongoing process. My personal feeling is that the more I learn then the better I am at helping not only me but also my teammates grow their business and create duplication.
My sincere hope is that this post helps not only existing network marketers but future network marketing leaders to actually create the life they deserve and avoid making some of these mistakes which could actually prevent them from creating true success.
10 Ways Network Marketing Uplines May Be Failing You
I want to say that this post may not make me very popular with some uplines, however I feel that I have always promised and will continue to tell you the truth, and these exact truths may just pinpoint dissection of the things that could either be making an upline look bad or it could be preventing that upline from even bigger success. 1.) They Bash The Company They Supposedly Used To Love. Have you ever had your network marketing leader, upline, or even seen other network marketing leaders move to a new company and then they bash the company they used to be in and used to promote it as the best thing on the market? Honestly, this is probably one of the dumbest things that they could ever do for multiple reasons.
A.) They could have people that they recruited still working there and those people could do very well if they were not bashing it.
B.) All the people they recruited and told them how awesome the company was, no integrity issue here huh?
C.) Do they really care so little about their old upline and even the company founders that they are choosing to burn those bridges?
D.) Do they not realize that when bashing something will only attract those that like negative crap to them? Personally, I choose to avoid negativity.
2.) They Make People Feel Bad. I totally agree that pushing people to hit their goals but if you push EVERYONE, even those that have not told you that they are coachable, you really run the risk of pushing too hard and make those individuals feel bad. The truth is that the people on your team that you make feel bad WILL NOT tell you, they will just disappear. You need to create a culture where everyone feels good and the ones that really want to step up then give them extra coaching and help them hit their goals is what I would suggest. 3.) They Have All The Answers. If you as the upline, or if your upline has all the answers and are always answering the questions from your downline, then you are not creating anything that is duplicable nor is your upline creating anything that is duplicable in your business. In fact this can actually scare a lot of your downline from advancing as they will feel that they need to always have all the answers, and they do not feel like they are capable of having all the answers. What needs to take place is that you teach to teach, by this what I am saying is that you teach your downline where to go to get their answers and you will want to go even one step further. You want to teach them how to they can help THEIR reps when their reps ask them questions. I have been guilty of always wanting to just give my reps the answer instead of pointing them to a tool that will supply them with the answer, and honestly, I work on this all the time. I am getting better but I personally feel I can do better and I will continue to work on doing better.
4.) They Tell Their Downlines To Not Study Anything But What Is Taught By The Company. The really extreme ones bash teammates that break their rule. Unfortunately, they lump all trainers that are not in their company as evil and bad. The sad part of this is that uplines that bash all other trainers as a whole are actually losing some of their very best people. It is necessary to remember everyone in network marketing is there to have their OWN business and people get sick of their upline being so controlling by bashing any other education outside of them and their company. This is absolutely 2016 and the idea of burning books and bashing trainers is old for today’s information age. I am not saying that all network marketing trainers mean well but I most certainly know that many of them only want you to be successful. Now do not take this wrong either, I am not bashing company training, and yes you should absolutely follow company training and definitely attend company events, but it is not smart to bash ALL outside training either. Now, this is my opinion, but I have had my biggest breakthroughs from coaching, and outside training.
5.) They Bash Someone For Learning What They Do For Marketing. I am not saying that everyone has to do all the stuff that I do but I would never bash anyone’s desire to learn more about the marketing side of Network MARKETING. The truth is that You Do Not need to become a master of marketing to be successful in network marketing. the flip side is that being good at marketing will not and does not guarantee success in network marketing. You must understand the culture, community, etc but it is absolutely not a bad thing to learn marketing.
6.) They Teach Warm Market Prospecting Only. In my opinion, this happens for one of two reasons. The person has a great warm market and simply does not understand that a large percentage of their team does NOT have a great warm market. The other reason can be that they do not understand nor do they know how to teach anything else. They do not understand that people on their team could have been in a lot of different other opportunities over the years and this is not their first time calling upon their friends and family members with a new deal.
7.) They Rule With An Iron Fist. Now this is similar to number two. I have seen people join a network marketing company and their plan was to be there forever, but due to the IRON FIST of their upline left the company. You never know how detrimental this can be on the growth and success of your team. If you do not take anything else from this tip, understand that network marketing is a volunteer army, and IF you make people feel AND look bad, you will lose someone that might have ended up being quite the producer.
8.) They Do Not Brand Themselves Outside Their Company. I could honestly write a book on this very subject. I want to keep this as short as possible, but the bottom line is that YOU DO NOT own your network marketing company. You do not have control over what happens with comp plans, products, etc. The truth is that any company can go out of business ( I really hope that never happens to you), other things can change that makes you decide that you must move to another company because of the changes, etc. If you have branded the company, the move can be a lot more difficult and even if you the person was a top earner, since they choose to not brand themselves they very well may not find that success in the next company. Why not create videos, or content to help your target market and attract people to YOU? That way you become the BRAND, and YOU will always be there.
9.) They Get Comfortable. Regardless even if you are the number one earner in your company you need to always be working on your skills. If you honestly believe that your company is awesome, why would you stop sharing and recruiting? It really should not matter even if you are making a million dollars a month, you will always need to sharpen your skills. It is very easy to get comfortable when you are crushing it and you make a decision to not continue your own self-development, but in my opinion, this is a huge mistake. Just because you are number one in your company, you are making lots of money, why not show your teammates what is possible by crushing out an even higher rank? Lead by example. Your team will do what they see you do.
10.) They Forget To Create A Lifestyle They Love. If you go back and look at number three you can see a whole lot of reasons how you can actually sabotage your own actual happiness. The truth is you need to think like the true business owner that you are and use events and tools to relieve your work efforts. If your team is only producing when you are around, then you have totally missed the RESIDUAL part of the residual income model. If you implement the teach to teach then you can have a thriving business without you breaking your neck every hour of the day and conducting 50 three way calls per day.
